Mientras el príncipe Tarquino está en el campo de batalla, escucha las alabanzas de pureza, belleza e integridad que hace el noble Colatino de su esposa Lucrecia. Decidido a conocerla, abandona sin explicaciones la batalla, y se dirige a casa de Colatino para comprobar si es cierto lo que pregona de ella. Al encontrarse con Lucrecia queda deslumbrado. Solicita descansar y pasar la noche en la casa. La generosa y honrada Lucrecia accede, sin imaginar lo que barrunta la cabeza del príncipe. Cuando todos duermen, Tarquino asalta el cuarto de Lucrecia. Intenta convencerla de que acceda a sus deseos. Después la amenaza con asesinarla a ella y a un criado que colocará en sus brazos.
