Manuel Machado, terminada la guerra civil, regresa a la casa que en Madrid compartían su madre y su hermano Antonio. Parece que no haya habido guerra en ella. Quizás porque Paca la asistenta ha seguido yendo para mantenerla. Manuel recuerda allí a su familia y especialmente de su hermano Antonio. Por ellos sí que ha pasado una guerra. Situados en bandos distintos Antonio ha permanecido fiel a la República hasta el final. Manuel, sin embargo, ha estado en Burgos escribiendo loas a Franco. Cuando Antonio muere en Colliure, Manuel viaja hasta allí desde Burgos. En Colliure se encuentra con la muerte de su madre a los días de Antonio y conque su hermano José le retira la palabra. Con este pasado a las espaldas Manuel rememora a Antonio en su casa y tiene con él la larga conversación.
